UK laptop fund for four-year olds

Children as young as four could have access to a laptop by 2006 under an initiative launched by the newly established eLearning foundation Tuesday, which focuses on bridging the digital divide in Britain. The independent foundation, backed by education secretary David Blunkett, has also received £1m funding from Microsoft (msft), and equity donations from four startup companies.

21% of Windows users run 95, 98 or ME

IDC estimates that of the roughly 514 mln paid-for copies of Windows on desktops and laptops worldwide at the end of 2004, almost 21% were the aging Win 95, 98 and Millennium Edition releases. Among the 19 mln Mac OS desktop and laptop installations IDC surveyed, just about half were running releases predating Mac OS X.
