Asia Pacific carriers unite to promote open market policies

Global and regional carriers have formed the Asia Pacific Carriers' Coalition (APCC) to "promote open market policies and best practice regulatory frameworks" throughout the region.The group includes carriers such as AT&T, British Telecom, Cable & Wireless, T-Systems (a division of Deutsche Telekom), MCI, Macquarie Corporate Telecommunications, StarHub, and Pacific Internet.

Novell cuts 21 percent of Asia staff

Networking software maker Novell Asia has cut 21 percent of its workforce, following its parent company's decision to slash about 19 percent of its worldwide headcount. Yesterday, Provo, Utah-based Novell Inc said in a statement that it would reduce 1,400 jobs globally and undergo restructuring to restore profitability in the face of poor market conditions.

Security survey: Two-thirds of Asian firms hit

KUALA LUMPUR--A recent survey on information and communication technology (ICT) security in Malaysia has discovered that 68 percent of respondents suffered some sort of cyber-security breach in 2000. The study, conducted by the National ICT Security and Emergency Response Center (NISER), a goverment-backed cyber security organization, indicated that the level of awareness of the need for a thorough process to deter hackers and crackers was very low compared to the US.
