AU government launches open source content system

Senator Eric Abetz on Wednesday launched a free open source content management system (CMS) to government departments and not-for-profit organisations.The Special Minister of State said the CMS -- launch of which was flagged last week at the release of a procurement paper entitled A Guide to Open Source Software for Australian Government Agencies  -- demonstrated the "viability of open source software solutions in the Australian government".

Australian Samba creator joins Torvalds at OSDL

Australian Andrew Tridgell has been appointed a Fellow at Open Source Development Labs (OSDL), a move which will allow him to continue leading global development on the open-source Samba project.According to a statement from OSDL -- a non-profit organisation supported by a consortium of Linux customers and vendors, including Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel and NEC -- Tridgell becomes the second appointed OSDL Fellow, after Linux creator Linus Torvalds.

Open source solutions provider Cybersource has lashed out at Microsoft chief executive officer Steve Ballmer's statement in Singapore that Linux is potentially in violation of various software idea patents.Con Zymaris, Cybersource chief executive officer, said that in reality, the platform which is most at risk from drowning in patent litigation is Microsoft's own, adding that even Microsoft's US$50 billion "cash hoard" may not be enough to save it.
