Samsung Q1
Samsung's Q1 is an example of a new class of computer -- the Ultra Mobile PC, or UMPC. Dreamed up by Intel and Microsoft, and first seen as real working hardware at the CeBIT show in Hanover in March, UMPCs slot in between handhelds on the one hand and full-size Tablet PCs on the other. Two other companies, Asus and Founder, have announced Ultra Mobile PCs, but the Samsung Q1 -- which will be available from 1 June at £680.81 (ex. VAT; £799.95 inc. VAT) -- is the first to arrive for review at ZDNet UK.

Fujitsu Siemens LifeBook E8210
For the last 18 months or so, 3G data cards have been available to plug into notebooks, providing them with wide-area wireless connectivity at theoretical speeds of up to 384Kbps. However, this is essentially a stopgap solution: you need to remember to carry the data card, and then insert it when you need a 3G connection, perhaps swapping out another PC Card peripheral to make room. Issues with driver compatibility, software usability and vendor support are also not uncommon with add-on 3G data cards. Integrating the 3G module and SIM card slot into the notebook, and preloading the drivers and software, should provide a more convenient and stable solution, and notebook manufacturers are now doing just this. Fujitsu Siemens has delivered the first system with integrated 3G to ZDNet for review in the shape of the LifeBook E8210; other manufacturers, including Acer, Dell and Lenovo, have announced similar plans.

HP Compaq t5720 Thin Client
The latest addition to the HP Compaq family of thin clients, the t5720 is the first to deploy an AMD processor. Not that the CPU is anything particularly fancy -- just an AMD Geode NX 1500, which majors on power saving (6 Watts) rather than performance. Still, the Geode NX 1500 is pretty nifty compared to competing thin client silicon, and its 1.0GHz clock speed puts the t5720 firmly at the top of the range in terms of performance.
