Acer n311
Acer has recently augmented its handheld lineup with the Windows Mobile 5.0-based n300 series. There are two models in the range, the £199.99 (inc. VAT) n310 and the £299.99 (inc. VAT) n311, reviewed here. The n310 lacks Wi-Fi, has less user-accessible memory, a slower processor and is supplied without a docking cradle. The remaining features mentioned below are identical in both devices.

Google Mini
The newest member of the Google search appliance family, the Google Mini, is aimed at small to medium-sized businesses looking to index and search information held on internal or public Web sites. No special knowledge is required and no additional software -- you just plug the Mini into your network and start indexing. At least that’s what Google would have you believe. In reality there’s a little more to it -- although not a great deal: the Google Mini took just over an hour to get up and running on our test network.

Mio A701
Handhelds are convenient platforms for GPS navigation, and the current trend is for manufacturers to build the GPS receiver into the device, rather than rely on an external unit. This provides an even more convenient solution: there's no need to pair the handheld with a Bluetooth GPS receiver or fiddle with wired connections; you avoid separate charge cables and regimes; and you don't have to find in-vehicle locations for two devices. When such a device also accommodates a mobile phone, the result can be presented as the ultimate business traveller’s solution. This is the claim for the Windows Mobile 5.0-based Mio A701, which costs £449 (inc. VAT) with Mio Map navigation software and European maps, and £379 (inc. VAT) without the navigation software/map bundle.

Asus V6J
Asus was quick off the mark with its dual core Intel Core Duo notebooks, announcing several models back in January: the W2J and A7J come with built-in digital TV, while the W5F and A6J emphasise portable audio/video communication with built-in Webcams. The £1,360.85 (ex. VAT) V6J, reviewed here, is a sleek and stylish 'thin and light' system that cuts a dash while delivering the solid performance that business users require.

Fedora Core 5
Fedora Core 5 is the latest Linux release from the Red Hat-sponsored Fedora Project, a free-to-download distribution that's mostly community developed and aimed at developers and hobbyists. As such it’s very much cutting edge, with Fedora Core regarded as a test bed for upcoming technologies. Technologies that could, eventually, make it into the commercial Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) product, but only when fully proven and debugged. The Fedora release cycle is much shorter than for RHEL. Indeed, it’s just nine months since version 4 was released, although a lot has happened in that time.
