Acer is getting set to release a range of Windows 7 laptops with a detachable touchpad that can function as a remote control for playing multimedia.
The Acer Aspire Ethos comes in two versions: the 18.4-inch Ethos 8951G and the 15.6-inch 5951G.
The laptops are expected to go on general sale in mid-June, with retail prices starting from £999, the company said on Tuesday. Some retail outlets are already listing certain configurations of the devices.
Both models include the removable touchpad, which has an orientation sensor so it can be used horizontally or vertically. The design is the latest attempt by a PC maker to differentiate its devices using an unusual form factor. For example, the Iconia Tab W500 tablet device comes with an optional keyboard dock to make it more like a full PC.
The laptops include access to Acer's multimedia sharing and streaming service 'clear.fi'. Clear.fi automatically gathers media files from all devices on a home network and identifies them as videos, photos or music. The content can then be accessed from any network-connected device.
