Cameras on today's smartphones are getting better all the time and in many cases people are leaving their point and shoot behind. I decided to test out some of the newest devices and put together an image gallery and video below from the HTC Amaze 4G, Apple iPhone 4S, Nokia N8 Symbian device, and Nokia N9 MeeGo device. There are other contenders, but these four are representative of the latest and greatest available today.
Check out my full ZDNet Smartphones & Cell Phones blog post that includes 15 second video clips from each of these four smartphones.

Here you can see the HTC Amaze 4G in macro mode doing a great job with a close up photo.
The iPhone 4S only has auto mode and a simple tap on the area figures out how to best capture the photo and does a good job.
The Nokia N8 doesn't do very well with macro shots, but I understand there are 3rd party software options you can install and try out with it to make them better.
The Nokia N9 surprised me with excellent close up shots and some of the best true colors. The funny thing is that switching to macro mode made the photos worse and going just with auto had them turning out just fine.
When I travel I do enjoy taking the occasional flower photo (my wife likes them) and I think it is pretty clear to everyone that the HTC Amaze 4G blows away all the rest of the competition with shots like this.
Even though it just has auto mode the iPhone 4S does a decent job of close up photos.
The Nokia N8 just isn't a powerhouse for close-up shots.
The Nokia N9 again surprised me and does well in auto mode so don't worry about trying the macro mode.
The HTC Amaze 4G does a great job of showing details and keeping colors true.
The iPhone 4S made the photo a bit yellow and the colors were not as true as I wanted them to be here.
The Nokia N8 image was a bit "soft" too and not as good as I thought it would be.
The Nokia N9 again performed very well and the colors were probably best compared to the rest.
The HTC Amaze 4G loses out on some detail inside the flower pot.
The iPhone 4S does a good job and this picture was honestly one of the toughest to pick. I looked at the surrounding rock details too in order to help me pick a winner.
Here is the Nokia N8 image in auto mode.
The Nokia N9 captures a nice photo and the colors were a bit brighter than actual, but many people find that to mean a better picture too.
There are several colors in the yard and unfortunately the Amaze 4G didn't seem to like the bright sky in the background. Colors were pretty good though.
The iPhone 4S did a good job with the yard.
The Nokia N8 didn't perform as well as I thought it would and left out some detail with a toning down of the colors too.
The N9 actually showed fairly true colors, but they are a bit vibrant. Then again, if you look at the lattice detail on the fence it is best in this image.
Here is a shot of the HDR mode on the HTC Amaze 4G that did help with the bright sky background seen in the earlier shot.
The Apple iPhone 4S has an HDR feature and I think it did a much better job than the high powered HTC Amaze 4G.
