Asus ultraportable U36 laptop in pictures

Asus has launched an thin ultraportable laptop that promises a battery life of up to 11.5 hours, despite using a standard-voltage Intel Core i5 processor.

Unlike most other laptops in the ultraportable category, the U36 eschews the ultra low-voltage (ULV) processors of the Asus UX21 or Samsung Series 5 Chromebook. ULV processors are often used to reduce battery drain and the amount of heat generated by the device.

Asus said it used a dual heat-pipe design in order to be able to use a standard-voltage processor in a chassis measuring only 19mm.

The device, introduced on Wednesday, has a standard battery life of 10 hours. However, it has a feature that allows the user to switch off the USB 3.0 port, adding up to another 1.5 hours, according to Asus.

"The U36 notebook integrates Asus's Super Hybrid Engine technology which intelligently manages energy consumption based on whether you're simply checking emails and browsing the net, or using more power-hungry applications such as video editing or playing games," the Taiwanese company said in a statement.

The U36 is made from magnesium alloy, meaning it weighs in at 1.44kg. It also has a coating designed to resist dirt, fingerprints and water.

The ultraportable has a 13.3-inch, high-definition display measuring 1366 by 768 pixels. It comes with 4GB DDR3 SDRAM, an Nvidia GeForce 310M graphics card and a 500GB hard drive.

On the side of the device there are microphone and headphone sockets, two USB ports, a LAN Ethernet port and a 5-in-1 card reader.

Additionally, the laptop has a 0.3-megapixel webcam, one USB 3.0 port, an HDMI output and a VGA port.

The U36 is priced at £699 and is going on sale at selected retailers starting on Wednesday, Asus said.
