While the processor specification hasn't been disclosed, the Chromebase, which relies upon Google's Chrome system, does come with a touchscreen option.

Alcatel has revealed the firm's new CareTime smartwatch, a variation aimed at children rather than adult users.

A useful option for adults other than the standard smartwatch-and-smartphone combinations which are often priced at a premium, the smartwatch is equipped with a 2G radio, limited call facilities and GPS tracking. Parents can then track the location of the device via an app to keep a remote eye on their kids in real-time, and can choose to be notified if the watch leaves designated safe zones.

  • Faraday Future's concept electric vehicle

    Faraday Future's concept electric vehicle

Faraday Future may have just revealed itself as a future rival to connected car powerhouse Tesla with the unveiling of a 1000-horsepower concept car. Dubbed FFZERO1, the concept car is able to use over 1000-horsepower and will accelerate from zero to 60 in under three seconds, with a top speed of 200mph.

The connected electric vehicle includes Web connectivity, a string of batteries which can be more easily replaced or changed than a single battery and a streamlined, sleek chassis likely to appeal to sports car fans. Overall, FF's vehicle shows what its engineering team is capable of, and we can look forward to seeing them produce their first EV in the future.

3D printing: Offering a helping hand

It's not often charity work in any form enters the realm of CES in Las Vegas, but this year, Robo 3D is using the event to not only promote its Robo 3D printers, but also as a way to give free prosthetic hands to those in need.

While demonstrating its products, Robo 3D will be printing prosthetic hands -- which cost as little as $35 a pop -- for donation towards e-NABLE, a community of volunteers which use their home 3D printers to print prosthetics for children and adults in the world who could not otherwise afford a replacement hand.

  • BMW's high-tech motorcycle helmet

    BMW's high-tech motorcycle helmet

BMW adapted its vehicle technology in an attempt to improve motorcyclist safety. A concept helmet headset revealed at CES 2016 projects traffic and road data on the rider's field of vision, including tyre pressure, oil rates, speed and obstacle alerts. In addition, there is a possibility of a rearview camera accessory which removes rider blind spots.

Skully was the first to produce a functional motorcycle helmet complete with a similar display, and you can pick these up for $1499. It will be interesting to see what BMW cooks up in the next few years, and whether the automaker can compare.

At CES 2016, ZDNet columnist Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols tracked down the Fasetto Link, a tiny 48 by 23 millimeter Network Attached Storage (NAS) device packing some serious punch.

Despite the fact you can fit the device in the palm of your hand, Link uses solid state drive (SSD) technology to provide from 256GBs to 2TB of storage, transferring files via Wi-Fi at a rate of up to 1900 Mbps.

  • Withings Go

    Withings Go

Many of the activity trackers now on the market come with a stream of bells and whistles. However, Withings took to the stage at CES 2016 to cater for those who simply want a cheap, no-frills daily activity tracker.

The Withings Go is a plastic tracker which is equipped with an e-ink display, functioning as a watch in real-time but also recording your daily activity, how close you are to reaching your goals and how well you sleep. Available for $69.95, the tracker will only need a battery replacement every eight months or so.

    BMW switches mirrors for cameras

With the arrival of the connected car and infotainment systems, we also now come across vehicles equipped with sensors to help us park successfully and indoor rear-view cameras. However, automaker BMW is taking this idea further with the i8 concept -- which replaces the traditional outside mirror with a camera.

This may be better for blurry conditions and for a more accurate viewing of what's going on behind you, but you have to wonder how much it would cost to replace them if -- or rather, when -- they are damaged.
