Inside banks' self-service technology

Banks around the world are adopting technology to help customers dodge queues and free up tellers at the same time. Here's a glimpse of the machines that could be coming to Australia soon.

These self-service kiosks are being deployed in a number of Nationwide Building Society branches in the UK. As well as enabling consumers to perform some tasks without assistance from a teller, in the future Nationwide hope to use the platform to cross-sell targeted banking services, such as overdrafts and loans.

Nationwide uses the kiosks for cash deposit, cheque deposit, cheque withdrawal and passbook update. The cheque withdrawal function will soon be removed, however, as the organisation believes such functions are better carried out face to face.

One example of the self-service kiosk used by First Citizens Bank. Bank customers can use the machines to start typical over-the-counter transactions, such as depositing cheques and so avoid queuing for bank tellers.

All transactions must be validated by the teller, whose screen is shown in the centre. The screen also allows the teller to monitor any difficulties the customers may be having with the kiosk and offer appropriate advice.
