    Side-by-side display comparison

This comparison demonstrates that the two iPads are both up to the task for both work and play. The decision of which to buy comes down to how important portability will be. The iPhone 6 Plus is useful for a phone, but for many activities the display may be too narrow for some.

The size differences are very notable with the three devices flipped over. The iPad Air 2 looks much longer than the iPad mini 3 in this photo, but they aren’t that different in person. The iPhone 6 Plus looks tiny compared to the iPads.

Stacking the three gadgets on top of one another shows how each progressively larger device is about as long as just the display of the next smaller one.

    Web page display

Comparing the same web page on the iPad mini 3, iPhone 6 Plus, and the iPad Air 2 gives the impression one would expect. The larger the screen, the better the page displays. Note that the iPads can render full the desktop version of most sites without issues. The iPhone 6 Plus often displays mobile versions.

iPhone 6 Plus with the Jorno Folding Keyboard

All three devices are useful gadgets for doing a lot of writing when used with a physical keyboard. Here’s the iPhone 6 Plus being used with the Jorno Folding Keyboard. The Jorno is not much bigger than the phone when folded for transport.

iPad mini 3 with the Jorno Folding Keyboard

The 7-inch display of the iPad mini 3 is the sweet spot for maximum portability and utility for work. Even though the screen is only 1.5 inches larger than that of the iPhone 6 Plus, it displays quite a bit more at a time.

iPad Air 2 with Jorno Folding Keyboard

Rounding out the comparison, the biggest iPad is the width of the Jorno. Having used the iPad Air and then the Air 2 as my primary work system for a couple of years. it is clear the full-sized iPad is often better suited for work.

Even Tim Cook is saying that the large iPhone 6 Plus is eating into sales of the iPads. But comparing the two iPads with the iPhone 6 Plus shows the larger displays offer a lot of utility.
