BT has pledged to rapidly step up its roll-out of super-fast broadband in London by installing more fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) and fibre-to-the-home (FTTH).
Currently, only about three percent of premises in the capital have access to fibre broadband, with the coverage shown in the map above. The telco's new plan is to hook up 87 percent of homes and businesses by the spring of 2011 (see next map).
This map shows the London neighbourhoods where BT is planning to extend the fibre, which promises to deliver speeds of up to 100Mbps. The roll-out will entail upgrading 114 exchanges that cater to more than two million homes and businesses.
BT also announced plans to expand its copper broadband network. This work will be more limited, as 90 percent of London already has access to an ADSL2+ connection, as shown here.
