Nexus 7: Tale of two cases

8 of 9 NEXT PREV
  • Google Nexus 7 case

This is the official case for the Nexus 7 available in the Google Play store. It is constructed of thin rubber designed to be as thin as possible.

While the case protects the Nexus 7 in the bag, it is awfully expensive for what you get.

Note that although the Nexus 7 includes magnetic "Smart Cover" technology, this official case does NOT power the tablet on/off by opening/closing the cover.

$19.99 in the Google Play store

The case completely covers the back and sports both Asus and Nexus logos.

  • Google Nexus 7 case

The tablet fits snugly inside the case, which opens like a book cover.

  • Google Nexus 7 case

This case keeps a thin profile and provides access to all ports and controls.

Note how the cover (bottom right) gaps open, even when held.

  • Poetic Slimbook Leather Case

This portfolio case is actually synthetic leather, in spite of the name, yet it looks like the real thing. It holds the Nexus 7 in firmly with a folding tab, and can assume two different stand configurations.

This case automatically turns the Nexus 7 on/off when the cover is open/closed, unlike the official Google case.

    $12.95 on Amazon

  • Poetic Slimbook Case

The portfolio cover has pockets for business cards and other small objects. The long black strap is a hand strap for holding the kit firmly in hand while open.

  • Poetic Slimbook Case

The Nexus 7 is comfortable for use in the hand with the cover open as demonstrated.

The case is very light and is comfortable to use for extended periods.

  • Poetic Slimbook Case

The case has a tab that holds the cover for assuming a stand for watching videos. The tablet is not extremely steady in this mode, but it's good enough for typical usage.

  • Poetic Slimbook Case

The case can also assume a configuration for typing on a table, as shown in this photo. The Nexus 7 is positioned at a good angle for reading the screen in this mode.
