Optus: 20 years in photos

Today marks 20 years since Optus began operations in Australia, and 20 years since Telstra had its first competitor.

This is Optus' network-management centre. After acquiring its carrier licence in 1991, Optus began operations on 31 January 1992. The company has now grown to have more than 9 million mobile services, 1 million broadband and fixed-line services, 280 stores and close to 10,000 employees.

After wholesaling on Telstra's analog network initially, in May 1993, Optus launched its own GSM network, claiming that the phone-call quality was "CD-like".

In October 2001, the company was acquired by Singapore telecommunications giant SingTel.

Optus launched the C1 satellite in June 2003.

Optus moved its headquarters from the Sydney CBD to the massive Macquarie Park campus in July 2007.

Optus celebrated 25 years of its satellite service in 2011 at the satellite facility in North Sydney.

Then-Prime Minister John Howard opened Optus' North Ryde offices in October 2007, just a few short weeks before he was ousted from political office.
