Getting all touchy-feely...

Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the new range of iPods in San Francisco this week. The launch event was screened live to the UK media at BBC TV Centre in London.

In trademark black turtleneck, jeans and trainers Jobs built up to the big announcement gradually first unveiling a new feature allowing customers to create their own ringtones from songs in the iTunes Store for 99 cents before moving onto the revamped iPod line-up, the all-new touchscreen iPod Touch and a $200 price cut for the 8GB iPhone.

The whole iPod range has received a refresh. The iPod Nano (pictured) has received the biggest overhaul with a completely new shape and set of features. The Nano is thinner but now has a wider screen to play video. It comes in a full metal design, a new range of colours, three games bundled in and has a 24-hour battery life for audio and five hours for video playback.

The 4GB version, which only comes in silver, will sell for $149 and the 8GB version, which comes in the full range of colours, will sell for $199 and will be available in shops almost immediately.

The traditional iPod has been renamed the iPod Classic and will now come in an 80GB and a whopping 160GB version, which can store up to 40,000 songs. But the big announcement of the night was the brand new touchscreen iPod...

The iPod Touch (pictured) - already covered in fingerprints - is just 8mm thick with a 3.5-inch widescreen display and Apple's Jobs called it "one of the seven wonders of the world".

It will come in an 8GB version for $299 and a 16GB version for $399 and will hit the shops in the next few weeks.

The iPod Touch (pictured) also comes with a built-in wi-fi antenna and Apple's Safari web browser, as well as built in Google and Yahoo! search and YouTube allowing users to surf the web.

Apple has also built in an iTunes wi-fi music store that allows people to search, preview and buy tracks on the move. This feature will also be available for the iPhone.

The iPod Touch has 22 hours of audio battery life and five hours for video playback.

The other big news of the night concerned the iPhone. Apple has decided to drop the 4GB version and will now just sell the 8GB version. It also revealed a hefty price cut for the iPhone, from $599 to $399.
