London's Cabinet War Rooms sheltered Winston Churchill and his cabinet during the World War II Blitz and this weekend it hosted this years's Cyber Security Challenge, the final of a year-long competition to find the UK's 'cyber security champion'.

The competition aims to find hidden talent and sees 3,000 entrants whittled down to 42 finalists who were put into teams to fight a fictional cyber-menace.

The teams were pitted against a foe aiming to bring down the UK banking system with a combination of digital attacks including phishing and denial of service attacks.

The teams had to analyse the attacks and report to a fictional board of directors about what to do next, and what the CEO should tell the Prime Minister as seen above.

As the 36-hour cyber-wargame played out, the stakes got even higher as the hackers extended their attack to transport, power and utilities sectors and even mounted an attack on a nuclear power plant — fortunately averted by the teams.

Here in the centre is this year's winner — Will Shackleton, a 19-year-old student at the University of Cambridge, who develops mobile apps in his spare time.
