Changes are in store for Microsoft Office 12. Here's an early peek at the initial beta of the core applications.

In Office 12, in place of the drop-down menu masthead, each application includes a ribbon at the top of the page. Tabs within Word 12 represent File, Write, Insert, Page Layout, References, Mailings, Review and Comment functions.

Microsoft Word 12 beta

Microsoft intends its Document Inspector to help manage the hidden metadata within Word files. This is aimed at sparing users the embarrassment of sending unwanted details to outside parties.

Microsoft PowerPoint 12 beta

As with Word 12, users will be able to highlight a chunk of text in the PowerPoint presentation application and instantly convert it to a chart or a diagram.

A revised calendar in Outlook 12 beta

The new calendar in Outlook 12 integrates tasks and appointments so that work is scheduled alongside the usual meetings and appointments. It even groups appointments from SharePoint.

The ribbon across the top of the Excel 12 screen changes as the user performs different tasks. New command tabs surface features as needed. For example, chart color and labeling options will become prominent when the user clicks an embedded detail within a chart.

Publisher 12 beta

Microsoft Publisher 12 is for those who need to take care of business without a design department. It takes advantage of the new graphics engine in Office 12, displaying hundreds of ready-to-use templates for quick selection.
