How to turn your Apple handheld into an eco tool - and get more productive too...

iPhone owners take note: there's a wealth of apps on the iTunes App Store designed to help you be more productive in business and turn your Apple handheld into an eco tool at the same time. From fuel calculators to taxi sharing, here's silicon.com's top suggestions for iPhone apps to boost your green cred - and get them all for less than a tenner.

Going green can make sense for your bottom line as well as the environment - especially when it comes to energy costs. The CFL Light Bulb Savings Calculator app (pictured above) can help SMEs or those running a home office to calculate how much money could be saved by replacing incandescent lightbulbs with compact fluorescent lamps, an energy-saving alternative.

The app has a 'custom' option for non-US locations - and will calculate estimated annual savings based on the number of bulbs being replaced, wattage and cost of kilowatts per hour.

Doing a lot of printing? Contemplating switching to recycled paper? This Eco-Calculator app will allow you to calculate the trees and water you will not use by using recycled paper for a particular project - along with emissions and energy saved.

US users can also use the app to calculate how green they would be if they used paper entirely manufactured using renewable energy.

Burnish the eco-credentials of your driving with this app: EcoDriverEd has a trainer feature designed to help you drive better - and therefore save fuel and emissions.

Using the iPhone's accelerometer, the app measures and scores your acceleration, deceleration, smoothness and speed. It also gives audio feedback while you're at the wheel, helping you improve your motoring skills.

Save your company money and cut CO2 emissions by sharing cabs on the fly. The EcoTaxi app puts you in contact with other would-be taxi passengers in your vicinity so you can arrange a cab share.

The app will detect other EcoTaxi users in your area who are also looking for a taxi heading in your desired direction. It will then give you the option to chat or call them to sort out the journey.
