Photos: The Welsh datacentre that's as big as Heathrow Terminal 5

And comes with its own electricity substation...

This imposing building is NGD Europe, one of the biggest datacentres in Europe.

Covering 75,000 square metres - the same size as Heathrow's Terminal 5 - it's capable of housing 19,000 racks of servers.

Located in Newport in Wales, NGD Europe is the brainchild of datacentre provider Next Generation Data Limited which has invested £200m to build the facility, opened at the beginning of March.

These are the units that feed the electricity into each row of servers direct from the national grid.

NGD has its own primary electricity substation which provides 180MVA (mega volt ampere) of power, enough to power a town the size of Bristol.

The facility is currently being used by BT and Logica at a combined cost of £20m over five years, although it isn't yet running at full capacity, meaning much of the building remains empty.

Here you can see the floor vents that will cool the servers when they're put in place.

This is NGD Europe's plant room from where the datacentre is monitored and controlled.

Once NGD is fully operational it will employ around 250 people, including security and building contractors.

This rack of fire extinguishers supplies the fire suppression system for the datacentre.

According to NGD, the facility is also built to withstand earthquakes.
