Six clicks: Rumored smartphones worth waiting for

These six smartphones may be worth waiting for

We have seen some fantastic phones released over the past couple of months, including the Samsung Galaxy S5 , HTC One M8 , LG G3 , and Sony Xperia Z2 . I've been having a hard time figuring out which one to keep and have already purchased and sold a couple. But there are some even better ones rumored to be coming in the next few months.

It is very difficult for companies to keep secrets anymore as shown recently where we knew just about everything prior to the official announcements of the HTC One (M8) and LG G3. We have seen lots of pictures, specs, and other information regarding these six possible devices and I am excited to see them hit the shelves.

Many of these rumored phones do not have leaked images so I have the current generation phone in the image associated with each rumored smartphone.

It is tough for smartphone fans like me to wait and I likely will go through one or two phones before we see these hit the store shelves. I may try to wait until September for the iPhone, but am enjoying my Android and Windows Phone experiences and may not buy the next iPhone.

Which of these six are you most looking forward to?

  • Apple iPhone 6

    Apple iPhone 6

Apple recently announced Apple iOS 8 and given they have a fairly consistent yearly iPhone release schedule we can count on an iPhone 6 coming, likely in September.

It is  most likely that the next iPhone will come with a larger display. There are rumors of two different size displays, but I am not convinced that will be the case. The 4.7 inch display model sounds good to me. Even though that is much smaller than all these new Android devices, it is a nice jump from the current 4 inch iPhone while remaining very pocketable.

I am very curious to see if Apple will start implementing some specs from Android and Windows Phone devices, such as NFC, optical image stabilization, and always listening mode.

For more on iPhone 6 rumors read CNET's special report on the iPhone 6.

Image: JDI (Japan Display, Inc.) which is a major supplier of iPhone displays launched a 5.5-inch, 1,440x2,560 screen which boasts 538 pixels per inch. Is this a hint of what Apple has in mind?

  • HTC One (M8) Prime

    HTC One (M8) Prime

HTC continues to release high quality devices with the HTC One (M8) and my personal disappointment is with the use of the same camera as last year. According to rumors the device looks to have a larger camera lens which hopefully means they increased the UltraPixel resolution.

Rumored specs include the new Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, and higher resolution 2,560 x 1,440 pixels display. These high end specs are what all the next flagship Android phones should come with so there is really no surprise when it comes to the internal specs.

The One (M8) may still be sold when the Prime launches as the Prime could be the successor to the larger HTC One Max.

  • Galaxy Note 4

    Galaxy Note 4

The fantastic Galaxy Note 3 was released last year and remains a great device to consider even today. Samsung usually takes some of the specs from their Galaxy Sx smartphone and then offers improvements in their following Note device.

The Note 4 rumors indicate it may have specs even higher than the other flagships should have, including 4GB of RAM. It may have an Exynos 64-bit processor or Snapdragon 805. In addition, the Note 4 is likely to have the heart rate monitor and fingerprint scanner from the S5.

Various rumors also indicate metal construction, 5 megapixel front facing camera, 3,600 to 3,800 mAh battery, and eye scanner.

  • Updated Moto X

    Updated Moto X

One of my favorites from last year, the Moto X, did not have the highest end specs when it launched, but it had amazing Motorola customizations and was optimized for the internal hardware. The next version looks like it may also not have the highest-end specs, but will likely still be an excellent choice with a compelling form factor.

Rumored specs include a 5.2 inch 1,920 x 1,080 resolution display, quad-core Snapdragon 800, 2GB of RAM, 12 megapixel camera and 32GB of internal storage with no microSD card slot.

  • Google Nexus 6

    Google Nexus 6

The Nexus 5 is not that old, but Google is on a yearly cycle like Apple so it is likely we will see a Nexus 6 in time for the holidays. CNET posted a story about an Android account tweet that had the rumor mills stirred up. Google I/O is coming up in a couple of weeks, but I highly doubt any Nexus hardware will be revealed with the focus on Android Wear.

The Nexus models don't always have the best specs, but Google did a great job with the Nexus 5 and it was a competitive device that sold for a very low full price. I can't find any information on the specs, but if we do see one it is likely to have the 805 processor, 3GB RAM, and an improved camera.

There is also talk that we will not even see another Nexus device, but Android Silver in early 2015. Maybe we will get some indication of the Nexus future at Google I/O.

  • Sony Experia Z3

    Sony Experia Z3

I bought a Sony Xperia Z2 last month and just sold it a couple of days ago on Swappa. The hardware was fantastic and I already am having sellers regret, but the camera did not meet my expectations and the all glass construction worried me a bit.

The Z2 launched just six months after the Z1, but the display was a major improvement and was worth getting an update. The rumored Z3 may come in September, about six months after the Z2. It may not yet have the upcoming Snapdragon 805, but Sony may work on reducing the rather large bezel space around the display.

The Z2 is already quite thin, but Sony may be reducing the thickness even further. We don't know much else about the Z3, but you can expect Sony will continue with waterproof designs with lots of doors.
