Google Play Music

The updated Google Play Music app is now integrated with Songza, which includes custom music stations depending on your mood. You can search stations based on songs, events, activities and genre.

BrainWave

Another music app with Songza compatibility, BrainWave changes the way you control your music choices through your smartphone. The app allows you extended gesture control by waving your hand across the screen. However, this app is only just in beta and there are a few kinks to iron out.

Squawkin

Squawkin is a free communications application which allows the user to send messages to individuals or group, including content seamlessly -- such as live audio, text and photos. The idea behind the app is to send a powerful message which captures an event through every type of media possible.

Nokia's HERE

Nokia's HERE mapping app, which is also integrated within some vehicle infotainment systems, has recently been extended to the Android platform.

HotSpot

HotSpot is a new application which creates a bridge between social networks and people around you locally. Log in via Facebook or Twitter, compose a basic profile and then select other locals you'd like to chat to -- or broadcast a message to every other HotSpot user close by.

Skype Qik

Will Skype Qik, Microsoft's new mobile-only video messaging service, be able to compete against the likes of Apple's Facetime, Google Hangouts and Facebook Messenger? Time will tell, but the app -- which allows you to send 42-second video messages to friends -- could help Microsoft tap into the mobile market.
