The NODES research group at the University of Helsinki's Department of Computer Science and researchers from the University of California at Berkeley have joined forces to develop Carat, an app which reveals the battery-hogging software on your mobile device.

Available on both Android and iOS, once installed, Carat measures battery usage across different applications over time, which is then shown to the user in energy reports. This useful app, available for free, can help you decide which apps to kill if you need more juice.

    Hostelworld.com

When you're traveling on a shoestring or just want to take a last-minute break away for a few days, budget accommodation -- and quick ways to search for rooms -- can be invaluable. Hostelworld is a service I often use, mainly because of the honest and comprehensive reviews submitted by other users. The company has now released a second app, available free from Google Play, which showcases popular hotels & hostels as well as includes handy filtering features.
