Sony Ericsson has launched refreshed versions of its Xperia Mini and Mini Pro handsets running the Android 2.3 operating system.

The two devices retain names that are similar to the Xperia X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro launched in February 2010, but include updated specifications to bring them in line with other Android handsets that are on the market now.

Both phones will include a new feature called 'Facebook inside Xperia', which integrates Facebook functions into commonly used parts of the phone such as the photo gallery, music player, phone book and calendar. Sony Ericsson said it intends to bring it to other handsets in the future.

"As people are becoming increasingly reliant on their smartphones for instant communication, Sony Ericsson is enabling people to 'like', share and comment more easily than ever before with Facebook inside Xperia," Sony Ericsson said on Thursday.

The Mini measures 82 x 52 x 17mm and weighs 94g. As with its keyboard-adorned counterpart, the Mini will arrive with a three-inch, 320 x 480-pixel touchscreen 'Reality Display with Mobile Bravia Engine'.

Under the bonnet, the Mini has a 1GHz processor, the Android 2.3 operating system and a five-megapixel camera capable of capturing 720p high-definition video.

The handset comes with a 2GB microSD card but can support cards of capacities up to 32GB, Sony Ericsson said.

It also includes the usual accompaniment of Google services that are bundled with Android, including Maps, Mail and Search, and will include Sony Ericsson's TimeScape interface on top of the Android Gingerbread OS.

The Mini is scheduled to arrive in the third quarter of 2011 and will be available in black, white, dark pink (pictured) or blue. Pricing details have not yet been disclosed.

The Mini Pro features many of the same specs as the Mini — including support for up to 16 shortcuts in the corners of the home screen — but adds a horizontal sliding Qwerty keyboard for easier messaging, emailing and document editing. Opening the keyboard automatically triggers predictive messaging actions, the company said.

The handset comes pre-loaded with enterprise features such as Microsoft Exchange support and OfficeSuite, which allows users to view emails and documents on the move. It also includes pre-installed McAfee antivirus software.
