    xVM VirtualBox 3.0 is a Type 2 Hypervisor for Linux, Unix, Windows and Mac. VirtualBox is ideally suited for desktop virtualization applications but also has some nice features for prototyping and developing enterprise-quality applications and environments.

    Most of what has changed in VirtualBox 3.0 from 2.x is under the hood. Various optimizations for the newer processors have been added as well as the ability for guest OSes to use up to 32 vCPUs. Here is the initial setup screen for a guest OS, in this case Windows 7 RC 64-Bit.

    Virtual Disk Storage can be either dynamic or fixed. With dynamic, the virtual disk file expands to fit the size of the data, whereas with fixed, the size is pre-allocated. Dynamic trades off storage space required at the cost of performance.
