Hurricane Tracker

Hurricane Tracker is an app which brings together up-to-date news and notifications from sources including media outlets, weather agencies and government bodies to help you prepare for the hurricane season. The app allows users to monitor and track both hurricanes and tropical storms as they occur and includes predicted paths, strength factors including wind speed and pressure, as well as live video streams.

In addition, the app compiles useful information in the case of a fierce storm -- such as where evacuation zones and local shelters are, as well as a list of emergency numbers.

Hurricane by American Red Cross

This award-winning app, Hurricane by American Red Cross, is a free mobile app to help you prepare for poor weather conditions. The app not only allows you to monitor hurricanes, tropical storms and flood-related weather conditions through an interactive tracker which displays predicted paths but also gives you the option to set up an "I'm Safe" alert for friends and family.

The app includes a wealth of information on what to do in case of emergency -- such as step-by-step instructions of what to do and when, during and after -- how to set up an emergency kit, and where the nearest Red Cross centers are based on your location.

Hurricane HD

If you want to combine functionality with high-resolution imagery, Hurricane HD is a decent choice. The app tracks emerging tropical storms and hurricanes worldwide, offering users imagery of excellent quality. There are a number of extra features such as five-day forecasts, computer models and path prediction, wind speeds, locations, storm speed, pressure and calculations based on how close you are to the storm -- and whether or not you need to batten down the hatches.

You can also use the app to look up historical data on hurricanes and storms.

NOAA SuperRes Radar US

NOAA SuperRes Radar utilizes radar technology to give users a high-definition view of weather events coming their way. A good bet for weather enthusiasts, the app prides itself on providing "four times" the resolution of weather events than other apps with a 1000 meter radius.

What also makes this app interesting is the depth of data included for weather events, including precipitation, temperature overlays, satellite imagery and a range of different map styles depending on your taste.

It is worth noting, however, that this app only covers the continental United States.
