Teaching is a juggling act, and sometimes it can be difficult to resist choosing the students you know have paid attention and will know the answers to your questions in order to make sure others participate in class. iLeap's Pick a Student is an interesting way to input your class lists and make picking students consistent. 

You can choose turn-based or random selection.

Lessons in Western schools have expanded beyond projectors and photocopies, and as the next generation of teachers more readily accept technology as a way to make their lessons more interesting and interactive, a number of applications have been developed for this purpose.

The creation of e-books -- when and if you have a time as a teacher, or if you want to make money as a publisher -- is made easier through apps including Book Creator. Available for the iPad, users can create their own books and manuals, choose portrait or landscape sizes, add images, edit text, and import video and music for use. 

Over one million books have been created using the app so far.

If you consistently drown in paperwork -- especially as report and parent conference season comes calling -- Teacher's Assistant Pro is a worthwhile investment to keep yourself organized. You can create student profiles to keep track of behaviour, achievements and infractions -- documenting incidents and reports, which can then be used for reference or emailed directly to parents and administrators via email.

When you're maintaining a balance between teacher talking time and student activities, and have a number of tasks to plough through in an hour, sometimes lessons threaten to overrun or you may need to think on your feet to spend extra -- or less -- time explaining subjects. 

Lessons are rarely completed to the exact times noted down in your plan, so why not use a free timer to try and keep things on track?

Lesson plans and print off exercise sheets are part-and-parcel of being a teacher -- but sometimes, there is a queue for the staff room's PC, or you run out of time.

If you have an app like Print Magic, then you can connect to Wi-Fi and wired printers in order to wirelessly print off what you need. You can print text, images, .pdf files (with an in-app purchase) and emails.

Evernote is often an app found on these types of lists, purely because the versatile nature of the app makes it a must-have tool for many users. The productivity app lets you take notes, capture photos, create to-do lists and record voice reminders. Notes can be indexed and are searchable, can be shared over email and social media, and the premium version can be secured with a PIN number.

PhotoSync is a way to rapidly transfer photos and videos between your iPhone, iPad, Mac or PC over your local Wi-Fi network. The app also supports sending and receiving media from cloud & photo services, mobile storage devices and NAS.

You can transfer and backup your media, manually or automatically. If you want to transfer RAW image files, then metadata including location is preserved.

Dropbox is one of the standard cloud storage providers currently available online. A popular choice -- wheres Box is often in use for business -- Dropbox offers free accounts to share photos, film, documents and music with others.

Once installed, the app creates a virtual folder so you can drag and drop files from the company's website or your PC and mobile devices. You can then create links to share this folder with others -- useful if you want to share assignments. 

Each free account comes with 2GB of space at signup.

Numbers, Apple's answer to Microsoft Excel, is a spreadsheet application complete with tables, charts, photos and graphics. The app includes over 250 formula functions and automatically saves as you work. Microsoft Excel, CSV and mail files can be viewed and edited in Numbers. 

The app can be used in conjunction with the iCloud.

Keynote

Keynote is an app you can use to create presentations and quizzes for class quickly and easily. It goes beyond the bounds of Powerpoint's chunky titles and text boxes, and instead offers users animated charts, 3D graphing and Retina Display support. 

To save time when lesson planning, 12 Apple-designed themes are included as well as a variety of style and format options. You can also import old Powerpoint presentations for a revamp.

If you need advice, tips, suggestions or inspiration as an education professional, the TED app is worth a download. Available for free, the TED app hosts thousands of talks, allowing you to download full videos on subjects including education, politics, business and music.

We all need an app to access and read our e-books, and Amazon's Kindle is a decent choice. The free app can load, organize and store Kindle books, magazines, textbooks and .pdf files on your mobile device for the spare 5 minutes you might have on the commute to work.

If you need extra reading material, you can buy additional books from Amazon's Kindle store.

Notability now includes iCloud support to update your notes across all of your devices.

This app grants you access iTunes U, a platform where courses from universities and other schools are hosted as well as a large collection of free educational content and lesson plans. Suitable for students to study and teachers to find supplementary material, iTunes U is also a way to find and take free courses offered by academic institutions. 

There are currently over 600,000 lectures, videos, books and documents available on thousands of subjects.

Touted as a secure social network for education, the app can be used for classroom discussions, posting assignments, grade tracking, file sharing and uploading, and includes features such as a news feed and resource library.

Edmodo has over 20 million users, according to the developer.
