‘ZDNet Recommends’ What exactly does that mean?

ZDNet’s recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. We gather data from the best available sources, including vendor and retailer listings as well as other relevant and independent reviews sites. And we pore over customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the products and services we’re assessing.

When you click through from our site to a retailer and buy a product or service, we may earn affiliate commissions. This helps support our work, but does not affect what we cover or how, and it does not affect the price you pay. Neither ZDNet nor the author are compensated for these independent reviews. Indeed, we follow strict guidelines that ensure our editorial content is never influenced by advertisers.

ZDNet's editorial team writes on behalf of YOU, our reader. Our goal is to deliver the most accurate information and the most knowledgeable advice possible in order to help you make smarter buying decisions on tech gear and a wide array of products and services. Here's a Kickstarter project that I funded within minutes of viewing the pitch video -- a universal smartphone/tablet charging station for mobile devices that are enclosed in protective cases.

Undercover charger

Sarvi Designs to kick start its charger for undercover phones, tablets.

Sarvi Designs turns to crowdfunding donations using Kickstarter to help launch its battery charger that will work even if the device is covered by a protective case.

Frankly, I can't beleive not a single vendor has addressed this problem before. You buy an expensive smartphone or tablet, which you then enclose in a protective case like an OtterBox, a Lunatik, Lifeproof, Griffin, Trident or a Ballistic.

You then realize it won't work with the OEM dock accessory anymore.

What I really like about this product is that it appears to be of quality construction -- machined metal, with a nice, simple industrial design -- and it will mate with practically any kind of smartphone or tablet in a protective case, with any standard type of smartphone charge connector, such as Micro-USB or Apple 30-Pin or Lightning.

The funding campaign for the Sarvi Designs smartphone dock runs through November 12. Early funders can get the dock for $25-$35.
