'ZDNET Recommends': What exactly does it mean?

ZDNET's recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. We gather data from the best available sources, including vendor and retailer listings as well as other relevant and independent reviews sites. And we pore over customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the products and services we’re assessing.

When you click through from our site to a retailer and buy a product or service, we may earn affiliate commissions. This helps support our work, but does not affect what we cover or how, and it does not affect the price you pay. Neither ZDNET nor the author are compensated for these independent reviews. Indeed, we follow strict guidelines that ensure our editorial content is never influenced by advertisers.

ZDNET's editorial team writes on behalf of you, our reader. Our goal is to deliver the most accurate information and the most knowledgeable advice possible in order to help you make smarter buying decisions on tech gear and a wide array of products and services. Upside
Sony has focused on ease-of-use with its new range of W series Cyber-shot cameras, adding in improved features that the Japanese giant says makes their devices more user-friendly than ever. Top of the list is an easier to use menu system which explains every option at your disposal through pop-up explanation boxes -- it's a simple idea that makes an amazing difference to the user experience. All cameras in the new range also come with Menu Guidance, a feature which can calculate the number of pictures able to be taken depending on resolution and available memory.

Sony's also upped the tech specs in the entire series. Standard across all W Cyber-shots are larger LCD screens, increased megapixel counts, Carl Zeiss lenses, better battery management for up to 420 shots per charge, and new anti-blur and high sensitivity technology. According to Sony, its new Clear RAW NR algorithm system helps reduce colour and luminance noise, while its High Sensitivity Mode features light sensitivity settings of up to ISO 1000, which allows fast moving subjects and low light scenes to be taken without blur or distortion. All W series models feature 32MB onboard memory and are compatible with Memory Stick Pro Duo.

The DSCW100 is the top of the line model for the W series, and features 8.1-megapixel resolution, a huge 2.5-inch LCD screen and a Carl Zeiss lens with 3x optical zoom. The W100 is available silver or black with a textured finish.

Downside
It's a Sony, so you're stuck with the more expensive Memory Stick Pro Duo as the memory card of choice.

Outlook
From our early hands-on plays with the W series, Sony seems to have come up with an affordable series of cameras with a decent set of specifications.
