'ZDNET Recommends': What exactly does it mean?
ZDNET's recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. We gather data from the best available sources, including vendor and retailer listings as well as other relevant and independent reviews sites. And we pore over customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the products and services we’re assessing.
When you click through from our site to a retailer and buy a product or service, we may earn affiliate commissions. This helps support our work, but does not affect what we cover or how, and it does not affect the price you pay. Neither ZDNET nor the author are compensated for these independent reviews. Indeed, we follow strict guidelines that ensure our editorial content is never influenced by advertisers.
ZDNET's editorial team writes on behalf of you, our reader. Our goal is to deliver the most accurate information and the most knowledgeable advice possible in order to help you make smarter buying decisions on tech gear and a wide array of products and services. Our editors thoroughly review and fact-check every article to ensure that our content meets the highest standards. Sony DRU-530A: a first look
Sony DRU-530A
pros and cons
- Editors' review
- Specs
Sony has a rock-solid track record in optical storage, and with the DRU-530A, it's simply improving on an already excellent product. The DRU-510A received an Editors' Choice for its blazing speed -- and the DRU-530A is even faster. However, this time it's Sony who is playing catch-up in the speeds-and-feeds race. Plextor's remarkable PX-708A, which hit the streets at the end of August, writes DVD+R at 8X (to 4X-rated media, no less); it also writes CD-R/RW at 40X/24X. Plus, the PX-708A has a headphone jack and volume control, which the DRU-530A lacks. Sony's DRU-530A, initially priced at £179 (inc. VAT) may end up playing second fiddle to Plextor's impressive PX-708A, which sells for around £175 (inc. VAT). Still, Sony's DRU-510A, which now goes for less than £150 (inc. VAT), remains a solid deal for multi-format aficionados who don't need state-of-the-art speed.
