Must-have Mac utilities for Yosemite

Must-have Mac utilities for Yosemite

There's little doubt that OS X 10.10 Yosemite operating system is a fully-featured platform that helps you to get a lot done, but by adding a few extras in the form of utilities you get an awful lot more from the platform with very little extra effort.

Actinic Express 2.0

Actinic Express 2.0

So, you're a budding e-commerce entrepreneur; you know what you're going to offer for sale, and you've registered your domain name. What's the next step? Generally, you'll want to put together a web site that will encourage your customers to trust you and buy your products. If you're a programmer or web site designer, you could build the site yourself from the code up. Or you could use Adobe's Dreamweaver or some other web site design application to help you build it. You could hire someone else to do it for you. Or you could find and purchase some ready-made web site templates. Alternatively, you could get up and running in minutes using Actinic Express, an intuitive and relatively complete e-commerce solution that allows individuals and small companies to set up shop online with the minimum of hassle.

Ipswitch IMail Server Premium 10.02

Ipswitch IMail Server Premium 10.02

IMail Server from Ipswitch is an excellent email server for small and medium-sized businesses. This lightweight (in terms of complexity, not features) alternative to Microsoft Exchange functions as a POP3 server or IMAP server and runs on 32-bit or 64-bit Windows only. However, it's compatible with a wide range of standards-based mail clients running on multiple platforms, while the Web Messaging and web-based administration clients run on Internet Explorer and Firefox under various operating systems. IMail's web components also now work on the Mac's Safari browser. Disappointingly, the Premium version's shared calendar and contacts only work with Outlook 2000 or later, and not with Outlook Express or Outlook for Mac.

Camtasia Studio 6 from TechSmith is an outstandingly easy-to-use program for creating HD-quality training, teaching and marketing videos for the web and mobile devices. It's a great way to demonstrate a process, a product or an idea. Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Preferred

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Preferred

Speech-to-text software is an acquired taste, but in our view it should be much more widely used than it is. The best software is easy to use and, in our experience, can be a lot faster than typing — even for accomplished touch typists. The best products are adept at a lot more than simply getting words into your favourite word processor: you can control a wide variety of applications too. Nuance has recently released the latest version of its market-leading Dragon NaturallySpeaking (DNS) product, which it claims is more accurate and faster than ever.

Actinic Business 9

3CX Phone System for Windows

3CX Phone System for Windows

In many ways the 3CX Phone System for Windows is much like other IP telephony solutions in that it enables companies to replace a conventional PBX with equipment to make and receive calls using VoIP (Voice over IP). In others, however, it’s quite different, with a number of unique features that really do make it stand out.

Exchange Server 2007 SP1

Exchange Server 2007 SP1

When it released Exchange Server 2007 at the beginning of last year, Microsoft admitted to dropping a number of the expected features in order to meet its deadline. Some of these were new to the 2007 product, but others were already available in Exchange Server 2003, causing more than a little concern among customers looking to upgrade. It comes as no surprise, therefore, to find many of these features reinstated in Service Pack 1 (SP1) in a clear attempt to finally deliver the product that Microsoft originally promised.

Terapad Pro

Terapad Pro

It seems that every week a new content management system (CMS) or blogging platform makes its debut, despite the fact that there's little to differentiate them. You pay a small fee (or nothing at all if you don't mind ads being placed on your site) and they take care of your site's design, installation and hosting. Terapad is continuing the trend, allowing both newcomers and seasoned web developers to get an attractive site live in a matter of minutes. Only Terapad is different — very different.

GIMP 2.4

GIMP 2.4

In a world where image editing has become almost synonymous with Adobe's Photoshop, it's easy to forget that other options exist. GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) has been a favourite among Linux users for many years and can fulfill the image editing needs of a large number of users — if not, perhaps, professionals. GIMP includes several sophisticated tools and is extensible via scripting and plug-ins. It’s also free to use and because it’s made available under the GPL, it’s a truly cross-platform product.
