Yahoo acquires iOS photo app maker GhostBird Software for Flickr
The startup shopping spree at Yahoo never seems to cease, and its latest purchase is GhostBird Software, which developed photo-editing apps for iOS devices.
Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
Yahoo confirmed the news via Twitter on Wednesday, specifying that the acquisition is intended to beef up Flickr.
The popular online photo sharing service recently unveiled a major design overhaul in May, both to the pleasure as well as chagrin of many of its users.
However, despite the long list of acquisitions the search company has made since CEO Marissa Mayer took the reins last year, Flickr is one of its few major units (aside from Yahoo Mail) to publicly undergo such a dramatic UI shift.
The GhostBird Software team elaborated a little more about the sale in a memo published to its landing page this afternoon:
As photography enthusiasts, we are long-time admirers of Flickr, and we’re thrilled to be able to bring our technology and passion for beautiful photos to the Flickr team. There has been so much exciting progress at Yahoo! as they re-imagine their most-loved products for mobile, including the awesome new Flickr apps for iOS and Android.
As of today GhostBird's apps KitCam or PhotoForge2 will no longer be updated nor even available to download from the iTunes App Store.
Users who have already purchased them and downloaded the apps can still use them as normal.
However, if customers who purchased these apps haven't downloaded them, then they're out of luck.
