Data based on predictions between the U.S. and European shopping season suggests online sales will reach $2bn in the retail sector.

The Adobe Digital Index 2012 Online Shopping Forecast analyzes over 150 billion website visits of customers that use over 500 Adobe retailers, and predicts this year's holiday trends based on six years' worth of data. Adobe expects Cyber Monday 2012 online sales revenue to reach $2 billion, growing by 18 percent year-on-year.

Purchases from mobile devices are expected to account for 21 percent of total sales across the holiday season, which equates to a 110 percent rise since 2011. Sales from tablets are expected to constitute 13.5 percent of total sales, more than double that of smartphones -- 6.5 percent -- and one percent will be due to e-readers.

Adobe's predictions also suggest that Black Friday -- November 23 -- will see a sales spike of 12 percent, year-on-year, with 24 percent of website visits originating from mobile devices. Free shipping day -- on December 17 where delivery is guaranteed by Christmas Eve -- is expected to see online sales rates boosted by 12 percent year-on-year.

Social media's influence is expected to send double the amount of hits to point-of-sale sites in 2012 based on statistics from 2011. Referrals from Pinterest are expected to grow the most, doubling from seven percent to 14 percent, year-on-year.

European consumers are expected to begin Christmas shopping sooner than their U.S. counterparts, and so daily sales are expected to increase by 150 percent from the first week of November -- as well as spike the week after Christmas when sales begin. Mobile shopping is expected to double year-on-year.

  • Thank the Supreme Court

You can thank the Supreme Court for allowing billionaires to pour unlimited funds into the last presidential election, and by extension, inject billions of dollars into the U.S. economy during the 4th quarter of this year. And I say this only half-joking. The recent elections produced something like $6 billion in economic stimulus. That's not an insignificant sum.
