Android cumulative shipments to hit 1 billion mark in 2013

Summary: Cumulative shipments by the end of 2013 will be 1.1 billion since the first Android device shipped in 2008, according to research firm IHS.

TOPICS: Mobility, Android, Google

Android device shipments are poised to pass the 1 billion unit mark in 2013, according to projections by IHS.

IHS said that global unit shipments of Android phones will be 451 million in 2013, up from 357 million in 2012. Cumulative shipments by the end of 2013 will be 1.1 billion since the first Android device shipped in 2008.

For comparison, Apple's cumulative iPhone shipments will be 527 million in 2013 and hit the 1 billion mark in 2015.

Android's growth is largely attributed to its partner network, which consists of Samsung, HTC, Motorola, LG, ZTE and Huawei. In 2016, cumulative Android device shipments will near the 3 billion mark, said IHS.

Overall, IHS outlined the obvious: Android and Apple's iOS dominate the smartphone landscape with 76 percent of the market in 2012.

  • Kudos to Google (and let's be honest, Samsung)

I wish you continued success in your based on innovative original products that, regardless of the temper trantrums being thrown by a certain fruity company, are pleasing hundreds and millions of users every day. Yes, yes, Apple fanbois will jump in here to start talking about Apple's bank account and stock price and they will claim that these are the only 2 things that count. Hundreds of millions of people disagree. Hundreds of millions of people have voted with their wallets. Hundreds of millions of people have made a decision to buy certain products and to NOT buy certain others. Hundreds of millions of people have decided that they won't buy from the company with the biggest profit margins, the biggest bank accounts, or the biggest market cap. Hundreds of millions of people have said no to Apple and that is thanks to innovative, hard working companies like Google and Samsung that provide great value to hundreds of millions of people.

So kudos to Google, kudos to Samsung, and kudos to hundreds of millions of happy Android owners. The next time you go out to buy a phone, remember what Apple is trying to do to you and let that factor into your purchasing decision.
    • Google is a joke

The Android platform is really a dumping ground for surplus components that the REAL players reject. Hahahahahahaha.

So, you think Android is special? That's what most Android lemmings are using. HAHAHAHAHAHA. They can't even upgrade those POSs to the latest OS. Those people got suckered into a cheap surplus component.

Hey, how about last generation processors in the Galaxy? That thing is a JOKE. My friend wants to dump hers and get a REAL phone. it's a pile crap. Buggy OS, battery needs constant charging, bad cell reception, runs hot and can't use it with one hand.
  • Android Is Now The Fastest-Shipping OS In World History

And once it passes that one-billion mark, it will also be the OS with the largest installed base.
    • Error

Actually the operating system name isn't Android but Linux. Android is the name of distribution.

And Linux has already have huge user base (hundreds of millions) already, what Android just grows for over other billion.

Those who are against Linux and its "ecosystem" should actually go and learn about ethics and freedom and change their opinions to against closed source.
      • Ethics and Freedom?

Idiot. The computer industry is NOT a FREE FOR ALL. Companies and individuals rely on the mfg to support the hardware and software. Without it, you get a bunch of cheaply made pile so crap with little or no support and just a headache.

There are laws to protect individuals and companies from getting ripped off. Do you think that people should be able to use whatever they want for free? Then no one can earn a living that way. SCHMUCK.

Next time you develop something, give it away for free. How about your job? Why don't you work for free? Can't pay your bills and hire people.

I think you need to go back to school and maybe take an ethics class.

What eco-system? The Android eco-system is a mish mash of retards that don't want to pay for anything.
    • And they will mostly be

Gingerbread users that don't spend any money. Yeah, what freaking eco-system.

A bunch of poor people that don't have any money.

Didn't Google earlier this year mention that they actually make more money from iOS users than Andriod users. This aught to be interesting to see what happens. If Google can't figure out a way to increase revenue from Android users, they might have to promote iOS instead. They have shareholders to report to.
  • but, but, but....

Jason Perlow said Apple's 1 Billion dollar lawsuit win (Even though appealable) is the demise of Android? Omg omg who to believe? Some one hide this article before he sobers up and starts throwing a tantrum.
    • Errrr

Wait until Samsung appeals and they will.

Why do people think that fine is final? By the time the lawsuit is finalized with the 21 [or more] phones that Apple wants banned, those phones will be long discontinued.
  • This is a joke....

Who actually believe these moron research companies? Look at the graph. They assume the same trend will continue year after year. It's a friggen solid line in annual shipments. What are they basing this on, except taking a straight line from the 2011 to 2012 shipments?
  • Well, yeah.

Anyone can dump product on the market. The thing is HOW MUCH PROFIT are these units going to make? A couple of bucks? These guys are dumping product.
  • Great Numbers

Fact is android is shipping on alot of good devices. The trolls here are afraid it makes apple look bad to acknowledge accomplishment on googles part. No one is attacking apple relax fan boys :) Your nanny OS will still be here tomorrow.
