Apple said Tuesday that its iPad mini with Retina display is rolling out to stores, but the big question revolves around how long supplies will last.

The company said its iPad mini---a high resolution 7.9-inch screen tablet---will be available online at the Apple store, through pickups at the company's retail stores and through carriers as well as a few resellers.

Analysts have noted that the reception to the iPad Air has been strong and iPad mini with Retina is also going to do well. The catch is that few analysts expect iPad mini with Retina to have enough units to meet demand.

The high-end iPad mini will run $399 for a 16GB model and $499 for a 32GB version. The iPad mini Retina goes up a $100 at each higher memory capacity ($699 for a 128GB model. Models with cellular connections will start at $529. The previous iPad mini starts at $299.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said in a research note that the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina are among the best received Apple products ever. Munster based his take on Twitter sentiment analysis. He said:

We believe positive reception for the iPad Air & mini Retina exceeds the iPad mini, iPhone 5, 5s, & 5c. The sentiment over the course of the past three weeks, which has shown improving trends, has demonstrated that the Air & Mini Retina are possibly the most well received recent devices from Apple.

  • I placed my order today for a WiFi 32GB model

For casual, in home, tablet activities, I have always felt a small 8" form factor was the best compromise. (For text books and other activities, the 10" form is better, IMO)

Well, that should do it for my holiday gifts to myself this year. Grin.

  • Tempting!

I had to get the ipad air with 4g 128 gb.The mini is attractive as well but for a few dollars short of a thousand dollars...I want the bigger size.I have had the ipad air for a week and it is amazing.I may pick up a 16 gb mini in the new year after the fury has died down.Either choice is a hands down win.IPads are the best!

  • We will see if the demand is that great.

Personally I just can't imagine blowing that much cash for a mediocre tablet, but the Apple fans will buy anything.

    • It's my money

..and you don't get to decide how I spend it. You people that pretend your opinions are the almighty crack me up, as if you know better what I should choose to like. Guess what, I'm buying g a PS4 instead of an Xbox One, and I bought a Honda instead of a Toyota. I bet you got some advice on those purchase decisions too. Ill buy whatever I please thank you. Its MY money, and my choice.
