Singapore's national broadband network (NBN) infrastructure provider, OpenNet, says more than 1 in 5 Singapore households have fiber connection and adds fiber subscribers now are more satisfied with their installation and usage, compared to last year.

In a statement Wednesday, the company said its subscriber base increased 150 percent from 100,000 at the start of the year to 250,000 in November 2012. It added more than 4,400 seasonal installation slots during the period of Sitex 2012 IT fair--held here last month--to cater to increased demand.

OpenNet also announced key findings from a survey it commissioned, which found fiber users were now more satisfied with their fiber installtion and usage compared to last year. Conducted by Acorn Marketing & Research Consultants, the Fibre Index Survey determined customer experience improved with satisfaction for terminal point installation raising from 68 percent in 2011 to 84 percent in 2012.

Among fibre broadband users, 74 percent were satisfied with their connection while 27 percent were extremely satisfied, the survey noted.

Internet users here increased the frequency of Web usage after switching to fiber broadband, OpenNet CEO Mark Blake said in the statement. While the country's broadband penetration remained the same, respondents said their daily usage increased from 76 percent to 87 percent in 2012.

In October, OpenNet was warned by Singapore regulator Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) for not meeting the customer service standards when building the NBN. It was fined S$100,000 (US$81,913) for delaying the supply of cooling services to Internet service providers.
