Society needs to wake up to the "ethical and spiritual implications" of the Internet according to the Church of England.

In its report -- Cybernauts Awake! -- published Wednesday, the church tries to help people tackle the moral and spiritual questions raised by new technology and urges IT professionals to "love your user as yourself" and users to "remember systems are dust".

Co-author Professor Simon Peyton Jones describes Internet-enabled computers as "dream machines" but warns that "every dream has its dark side". Among concerns raised by the report is the idea that e-commerce will destroy town centres and increase inner-city deprivation.
