AMD demos 'Istanbul' six-core processor

AMD said Wednesday that it recently demonstrated its six-core AMD Opteron processor dubbed Istanbul.The 45nm chip is set to launch in the second half of this year and AMD is aiming to be "the only x86 six-core processor available for two- and four-socket systems and higher.

AMD said Wednesday that it recently demonstrated its six-core AMD Opteron processor dubbed Istanbul.

The 45nm chip is set to launch in the second half of this year and AMD is aiming to be "the only x86 six-core processor available for two- and four-socket systems and higher."

In a blog post, AMD said that the Istanbul demonstration showed off better memory throughput, easy upgrade capabilities and multiple cores being stressed. 

The takeaway for me: AMD's Istanbul appears to be on schedule for the second half. For those of you that actually track chip demos--I favor software demonstrations much--you can view this video:
