Today sees Advanced Micro Devices launch its entry "Lisbon" Opteron 4100 server socket C32 processors.

The new Opteron 4100 parts have many features in common with the "Magny-Cours" Opteron 6100 processors. Both make use of a 45nm manufacturing process and both are made by GlobalFoundries.

The "Lisbon" cores are have many features in common with the 6-core "Istanbul" Opteron 2400 and 8400 processors cores. Transistor count, and cache memory remain essentially unchanged. The biggest improvement is the move from DDR2 to DDR3 memory for the integrated memory controllers (while "Istanbul" had support for HyperTransport 3 - HT3 - interconnect links, the chipsets didn't).

The "Lisbon" processors come in either 4 or 6 cores per die flavors and have 64KB of L1 data, 64KB of L1 instruction cache per and 512KB of L2 cache per core, and 6MB of L3 cache per processor.

The 4100 Opterons are designed for High Performance Computing (HPC) roles where cost per performance per watt is a critical factor.

Here's a list of 4100 parts launched:

  • 4184 - 2.8GHz - 6 cores - $316
  • 4180 - 2.6GHz - 6 cores - $188
  • 4130 - 2.6GHz - 4 cores - $125
  • 4122 - 2.2GHz - 4 cores - $99
  • 4176 HE - 2.4GHz - 6 cores - $377
  • 4174 HE - 2.3GHz - 6 cores - $255
  • 4170 HE - 2.1GHz - 6 cores - $174
  • 4164 EE - 1.8GHz - 6 cores - $698
  • 4162 EE - 1.7GHz - 6 cores - $316

HE - Highly Efficient, EE - Extremely Efficient
