According to the online company's first poll of members, its members are 70 per cent aged between 35 and 64 and 58 per cent earn over £25,000 per year. A quarter live in the south-east of England, 89 per cent own their home, and they are more than 50 per cent more likely to have two or more children than the rest of the UK populace.

However, one cliche seems to have some basis in truth: 89 per cent of members are male.

Marketing director Karen Thomson said the survey showed AOL members "are not interested in technology for its own sake".
