The Brazilian subsidiary of Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL) has acknowledged that it is considering the possibility of building a Mac plant in the country but insisted no decision has been made about extending the company's manufacturing efforts to South America.

"So far, no decision on the issue has been taken," said Apple Brazil General Manager Luciano Kubrusly in a statement. "Any piece of news linking Apple Brazil and the construction of a plant in the country has absolutely no basis."

According to rumors that first cropped up late last year, the company has been scouting locations that include the countryside outlying São Paulo as well as other states in the northeastern part of the country. At the time, Apple's first choice for a factory site was reportedly Curitiba, the capital of the state of Parana. -- Rogério Taira, MacNews Brasil, and Matthew Rothenberg, ZDNet News
