Apple has succumbed to the lure of the Trusted Platform Module. The first development kits of OS X for Intel have been shipped. The hardware platforms Apple is sending to developers includes the TPM chip.

I have several thousand words to say about why TPM is a bad idea. But after the Sarbanes-Oxley post below I doubt anyone has the patience to read my ravings.

Let me leave it at pointing out that non-value-added features fly in the face of market reality. If a manufacturer adds security measures that secure the manufacturer but add cost in terms of cents and risk to the end user’s privacy they will fail.

TPM was a bad idea for PC’s. It is a rotten idea for Macs.
