Aimed at traditionally strong Mac areas like publishing, education, and environments with mixed Mac and Windows OS systems, the new server is based on the accelerated PowerPC 604e processor running at 350MHz. In addition to the fastest iteration yet of PPC, the new server also boasts Apple's latest "1Mb Inline level 2 cache".

Apple's Neil Thomas told ZDNet that the new server "Macintosh customers demand powerful technology that is simple to use. The Workgroup Server 9650/350 further addresses this need by offering significant speed and performance improvements".

Apple will need the new sever to do well if they are to improve on their lacklustre performance in the server market where they currently have a tiny market share.
