A Pennsylvania man submitted the winning bid of $7,000 for a notebook signed by Gateway CEO Ted Waitt, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and Intel CEO Craig Barrett, Gateway said Tuesday.

Joseph Smith of Bellevue, Penn., won the Gateway Solo 3450 notebook loaded with Windows XP in a silent auction that ended last week. The auction was designed to benefit NPower NY, a nonprofit that provides tech assistance to other nonprofits in New York City. Gateway organized the auction following the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The notebook was autographed Oct. 24 at the New York City event to mark Microsoft's launch of its Windows XP operating system. --Natalie Weinstein, Special to ZDNet News
