Spam protector causes mischief

Several thousand BT Yahoo! Mail customers have been unable to send email from their accounts following a Yahoo! security update.

Users have been receiving a 553 error message when trying to send emails from Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird and Mac Mail.

A BT spokesman told silicon.com: "There has been a Yahoo! security update to protect people from spam and a handful of customers have been affected who use external email clients."

In order to fix the problem users have to validate the email address from which they want to send a message by logging into Yahoo! Mail and following instructions for a fix which can be found here.

BT and Yahoo! joined forces in 2005 to provide BT Broadband customers with Yahoo! web services and tools such as a customisable radio station and a personalised homepage.
