The faulty server issue began yesterday and the telco began to rectify the problems this morning.

Spokesperson Martin Barr confirmed the problems first reported by iTnews, and said that the issues had delayed the processing of customer emails.

"We had a server issue yesterday which affected some BigPond customers being able to log into their BigPond email accounts or causing them to experience delays in receiving email," Barr said.

"The issue was fixed this morning and we are now working to ensure the remaining backlog of emails are being distributed to customers."

Telstra expected the repairs to be completed by day's end. It also expected to reopen locked accounts today that were shut down during the repairs.

"We are currently having problems with BigPond Mail. This is affecting customers nationally. Customers may experience delays in receiving mail or accessing their accounts. Technicians are treating this issue as a priority and are working on the problem," Telstra noted on its status update page.

Scheduled network maintenance with BigPond Cable have been in place across the eastern states for weeks, but it is unknown if the unscheduled outages are related.

"Due to scheduled Network Maintenance, BigPond Cable Customers ... may experience a service interruption for up to 30 minutes during the disruption period," the telco notes on its scheduled disruptions list.

The telco apologised for the outages.
