Certeon says cloud storage needs network virtualization (and love) too

Performance of virtual and cloud computing environments can be improved through the use of network virtualization techniques. Certeon thinks it has the solution.

Certeon LogoDonato Buccella, CTO of Certeon, stopped by to discuss how network virtualization can improve the performance of both virtual and cloud computing environments.

The entry point for the conversation was a discussion of the limitations many organizations experience when trying to use cloud storage as part of their overall computing solution. While cloud storage can appear to be a cost-effective option, the overall performance of cloud storage can suffer for a number of reasons.

The time it takes to retrieve data, described as storage latency, can become an issue when workloads attempt to store and retrieve large amounts of data. This challenge can be seen in private, public and hybrid cloud configurations.

Certeon would recommend the deployment of network virtualization, or "WAN optimization," that supports a combination of "bandwidth enhancing" capabilities. Certeon's product combines deduplication and single-instance storage technology to speed up access to data regardless of whether it is stored in a public, private or hybrid storage cloud. Certeon would point out that deduplication reduces the amount of data sent over the network. How it accomplishes this trick is pulling down or sending back only data that has changed rather than sending everything back and forth to the cloud storage facility.
