China orders airline chiefs to fly on Jan. 1, 2000

The Chinese government really wants to make sure its state-run airlines fix their Y2K problems -- so it has ordered the managers of those airlines to personally board flights on Jan. 1, 2000, Agence France-Press reported Friday.

China's State Council, or cabinet, did not start to address the Year 2000 problem until July 1997 and only ordered an evaluation of the problem in government offices and bodies in July last year, the news service reported.
