Comcast has started rolling out its broadband meter to customers nationwide, a move that should be applauded and hopefully followed by other Internet providers. The nationwide rollout began on Thursday, according to a post on Wired's Epicenter blog.

This, of course, isn't a physical meter but rather an online one linked to a customer's account that is intended to give customers an anytime glimpse at their usage and, specifically, how close they are to reaching that 250GB limit imposed back in the summer of 2008.

I initially criticized the company for imposing a limit on an always-on connection. But the company maintained that most customers come no where near the 250 GB limit and instead fall into the 2GB to 4GB range every month. Still, consumers needed a tool to be able to track their usage, just as the wireless carriers have given us the tools to track and manage our voice minutes.

Customers will reportedly receive an e-mail with link to the meter, which will be available through customers' online accounts.
