Comdex: Infra-red moves to cameras, phones

The Infra-red data Association (IrDA) this week showcased the swift progress it is making in the widespread implementation of infra-red ports.

In just a few years, IR speeds have more than quadrupled and the ports have become ubiquitous in handheld and mobile PCs. Now IrDA is targeting makers of digital cameras and even mobile phones and pagers.

The body said that Canon, Casio, Ericsson, Hewlett-Packard, Motorola, NEC, Panasonic, Philips, Sharp and Sony are among those who plan to build IR into 1998 products and beyond.

Using an IrDA port in such devices would enable cordless downloads of camera images and contact-book beaming from PC to cellphone or pager, a spokesman said.
