The Commonwealth Bank acknowledged its automatic teller machine (ATM) and Netbank services were down for "a couple of hours" today and conceded late in the afternoon it was yet to find the cause of the problem.

ZDNet Australia  contacted the CBA after receiving reports today from readers that they could not access the services.

A spokesman said the CBA was not sure what had happened, but said the institution was "investigating the problem".

The timing of the difficulties was slightly unfortunate for the CBA, whose senior managers today briefed the market on progress on the controversial New Which Bank efficiency program.
